This is a fantastic opportunity for a policy professional looking to influence change, shape sector-wide conversations, and play a key role in representing members' voices to government, regulators, and policymakers.
Our client is a membership organisation with a strong presence across the UK, representing a diverse and vital professional sector. They have a well-established policy function and are seeking a motivated and politically astute individual to support the development and delivery of their public policy and advocacy work.
The Role
As Public Policy Officer, you will work as part of a collaborative and mission-driven policy and public affairs team. Your role will focus on monitoring developments across Westminster, Whitehall, and the devolved nations, developing position papers, and engaging directly with stakeholders to ensure the organisation’s members are heard at every level.
You’ll contribute to consultations, briefings, and research that shape national policy, helping the organisation to be a trusted and credible voice. This is a fantastic role for someone who understands policymaking, enjoys engaging with external stakeholders, and can synthesise complex material into practical policy recommendations.
Key Responsibilities
- Monitor and analyse policy developments, legislation, and regulatory changes affecting the organisation and its members.
- Draft responses to government consultations, regulatory reviews, and calls for evidence.
- Produce high-quality policy briefings, position papers, and briefing notes for internal and external use.
- Represent the organisation at policy meetings, roundtables, conferences, and parliamentary events.
- Work with colleagues to identify emerging policy issues and recommend organisational responses.
- Liaise with members to gather views and insights that inform the organisation’s policy positions.
- Support engagement with key stakeholders including government departments, parliamentarians, arm’s-length bodies, and sector partners.
- Contribute to policy campaigns, working closely with the communications and public affairs teams.
- Maintain accurate records of policy engagement and provide regular reports to internal stakeholders.
Person Specification
Essential Skills and Experience
- Demonstrable experience in a policy, public affairs, or government relations role, ideally within a membership body, charity, think tank, or government department.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain complex ideas clearly and concisely.
- Strong understanding of UK policymaking processes, including how to influence decisions at Westminster and Whitehall.
- Ability to draft compelling policy briefings, consultation responses, and evidence-based position papers.
- Experience engaging with external stakeholders, including policymakers, civil servants, and regulatory bodies.
- Proven research and analytical skills, with attention to detail and the ability to synthesise large volumes of information.
- Strong organisational skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines.
- Commitment to collaborative working and building relationships across teams and sectors.
Desirable Attributes
- Experience working with or on behalf of a membership body or regulated profession.
- Knowledge of the policy issues facing the relevant professional sector.
- Familiarity with devolved government policy and regulatory systems in Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland.
- Experience using CRM systems or policy monitoring tools.
