Public Affairs and Commmunications Recruitment

The best candidates are not applying for your role.

The strongest public affairs and communications professionals are already employed, well-networked and selective about what they consider. They do not respond to job advertisements. Westminster Search reaches them.

What we do, and what we don't

Westminster Search is a specialist recruitment consultancy for public affairs and communications. We work with agencies, charities, NGOs and membership bodies to identify and secure professionals who can operate credibly in complex political, regulatory and stakeholder environments.

We do not work on graduate or entry-level roles. We do not run volume recruitment processes. Our work is centred on manager and director-level appointments, where experience, judgement and cultural fit determine whether a hire succeeds or fails.

That focus is deliberate. In a market where the best candidates are rarely available and reputations travel quickly, quality matters more than speed.

A market that requires more than recruitment

Public affairs and communications hiring is not a volume exercise. Strong candidates in this sector are highly networked, move through trusted relationships, and make decisions based on opportunity quality, not job board listings.

At the same time, employers need individuals who can read political and regulatory environments, manage complex stakeholder relationships, and deliver communications strategies that hold up under scrutiny.

This creates a hiring environment where access and judgement are the critical variables, not reach, not speed, not volume. Both are things Westminster Search is built around.

Who we work with

Our clients fall into two groups, each with distinct hiring patterns and requirements.

Agencies

Public affairs and communications consultancies, including those with a property and planning focus, that need to hire into a competitive candidate market without the internal capacity to run an extensive search process.

In-House teams

Charities, NGOs and membership bodies hiring into public affairs and communications functions. Often mission-driven roles requiring professionals who understand both policy and stakeholder complexity.

The roles we recruit

We concentrate on mid-to-senior appointments, particularly:

Our core strength is at manager and director level, where the difference between the right hire and the wrong one has real consequences for team performance and client delivery.

How we find the right people

Our approach is built on two things that most generalist recruiters cannot replicate: network and understanding.

We do not rely on job boards or volume outreach. Instead, we map the market, identify the individuals who are relevant. Whether or not they are actively looking, and approach them directly. We assess suitability based on a genuine understanding of public affairs, campaigns and communications, not a list of keyword matches.

This allows us to do two things consistently:

Our background

Westminster Search is built on over a decade of direct experience in public affairs, working in politics and campaigns, in-house recruitment, and building networks across agencies and organisations throughout that time.

That background is not incidental. In a sector where context matters as much as capability, the ability to assess a candidate's credibility — not just their CV. This is what separates a well-judged shortlist from a wasted process.

Our network is not sourced from LinkedIn searches. It is built from years working inside the sector.

Why clients engage us

Clients typically come to us in one of three situations:

We are not the quickest option. We are the option that delivers the right person and in a relationship-driven sector, that distinction matters.

Where we work

The majority of public affairs and communications roles are London-based, and that is where the bulk of our work sits. We also support clients across the UK, reflecting the genuinely national nature of politics, policy and communications work.
