Media Relations Officer - London
Westminster Search is supporting a well-established, medium-sized company in the search for a proactive and skilled Media Relations Officer. This is an excellent opportunity for a communications professional to take ownership of media engagement, shape the company’s public profile, and contribute to its growing reputation across the UK and beyond.
The successful candidate will join a collaborative external affairs team and play a key role in developing media materials, managing press relationships, and ensuring the company’s voice is clear, consistent, and well-represented in the public sphere.
The Role
As Media Relations Officer, you will be responsible for managing media enquiries, building journalist relationships, and delivering proactive and reactive communications that support the company’s brand, products, and leadership voice. Working closely with internal teams and external partners, you’ll help position the business as an informed and trusted voice in its industry.
You’ll also play a crucial role in supporting the development of press releases, media statements, thought leadership, and campaigns that align with the company’s strategy and values.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and maintain relationships with key national, regional, and trade journalists
- Write and distribute press releases, statements, Q&As, and media briefings
- Coordinate responses to media enquiries and support crisis or reactive communications
- Work with subject matter experts and senior leaders to develop thought leadership and commentary
- Monitor media coverage and provide regular reporting and insights to internal stakeholders
- Collaborate with marketing, digital, and policy colleagues on integrated campaigns
- Identify opportunities for positive media coverage across business areas and campaigns
- Manage the press office inbox and ensure consistent, timely responses
- Prepare media briefings and support media training for spokespeople where required
- Support issues management and ensure the company’s media output is clear, accurate, and aligned with its tone and values
Person Specification
Essential Experience & Skills
- Experience in a media relations, press office, or communications role
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to write clearly and concisely for a range of audiences
- Understanding of UK media landscape and how to engage with journalists effectively
- Experience drafting press materials, handling media enquiries, and briefing spokespeople
- Proactive, organised, and comfortable managing multiple tasks and deadlines
- Ability to understand complex topics and translate them into accessible media narratives
- Professional approach and sound judgment, particularly under pressure
Desirable Attributes
- Experience in a corporate, agency, or in-house communications environment
- Knowledge of the company’s industry (e.g. professional services, tech, infrastructure, or consumer sectors)
- Familiarity with crisis communications and reputation management
- Basic understanding of digital and social media channels in a media context
- Comfortable using media monitoring tools and compiling reports
