Based in London, this is a strategic leadership role at the heart of UK politics and policy, ideal for an experienced professional with the drive and credibility to shape and lead a high-impact public affairs function.
You will lead the organisation’s engagement with government, parliament, regulators, and key political stakeholders, ensuring its voice is heard at the highest levels and that its reputation, policy objectives, and long-term interests are well represented.
The Role
As Head of Public Affairs, you will be responsible for developing and delivering an integrated public affairs strategy that aligns with the organisation’s broader goals. You will work closely with senior leaders to position the organisation as a trusted voice on key issues, and ensure political engagement is timely, influential, and aligned with strategic priorities.
This is a senior and outward-facing position requiring excellent political judgement, communication skills, and the ability to lead and inspire a small, focused team.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the development and execution of the public affairs strategy, identifying opportunities and risks across the political landscape
- Build and maintain strong relationships with parliamentarians, ministers, officials, and key influencers in Westminster, Whitehall, and beyond
- Provide expert political counsel to senior leaders and colleagues across the organisation
- Represent the organisation in meetings, briefings, and events with political and regulatory stakeholders
- Manage political monitoring and horizon scanning, ensuring the organisation remains responsive to developments in policy and regulation
- Oversee responses to government consultations, select committee inquiries, and relevant legislative processes
- Develop compelling policy positions, briefings, and communications that support advocacy objectives
- Lead a small team of public affairs professionals, supporting their development and delivery
- Work collaboratively with colleagues in media, policy, and external affairs to ensure a joined-up approach
- Maintain strong internal visibility of political engagement activity through reporting and cross-team briefings
Person Specification
Essential Experience & Skills
- Significant experience working in a senior public affairs or political role, ideally in a regulated or high-profile sector
- Excellent understanding of the UK political system, parliamentary process, and policymaking environment
- Proven track record of engaging effectively with senior political stakeholders and securing policy influence
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, with experience drafting briefings, correspondence, and consultation responses
- Ability to interpret complex political and policy developments and communicate them clearly to internal and external audiences
- Strong leadership skills, including experience managing and developing a team
- Sound political judgement and discretion, with the ability to act as a trusted adviser to senior leaders
- Comfortable working in a fast-paced, high-stakes environment with competing priorities
Desirable Attributes
- Experience in sectors such as infrastructure, transport, energy, financial services, health, or regulated industries
- Existing network of political and policy contacts in Westminster and Whitehall
- Experience influencing legislation, regulation, or public policy at national level
- Understanding of devolved governments and local government structures
- Familiarity with stakeholder engagement, coalition building, and campaign planning
