The Role As Head of Communications, you will play a pivotal leadership role, working closely with the Chief Executive and senior management to set and deliver a communications strategy that supports the organisation’s mission and amplifies its impact.
You will oversee all aspects of external communications, from media and public affairs to digital content and brand. You will lead a small but capable team and bring strong editorial judgment, political nous, and a collaborative approach to working across departments.
This is a role for someone who can think strategically and act decisively – equally at home pitching to national media as they are developing a multi-channel campaign or navigating a reputational issue. You will be a visible and influential figure internally and externally, trusted for your expertise and known for your clarity and integrity.
Key Responsibilities Develop and lead the organisation’s communications strategy in alignment with organisational priorities.
Act as a trusted advisor to the CEO and leadership team on communications, media, and reputational matters.
Build and maintain relationships with key journalists, commentators, and editors to secure high-impact media coverage.
Shape and oversee messaging for major announcements, research publications, and campaigns.
Lead on crisis communications and risk mitigation, including the development of protocols and scenarios.
Oversee digital communications, including website, social media channels, and email marketing, ensuring coherence, quality, and audience growth.
Manage and mentor a small communications team, encouraging creativity, continuous learning, and high performance.
Champion brand consistency and accessibility across all platforms and materials.
Use data and analytics to evaluate impact, inform strategy, and report to internal and external stakeholders.
Person Specification Essential Experience & Skills: Proven experience in a senior communications role, preferably within a mission-led, policy-focused, or third sector organisation.
Demonstrable success in developing and delivering integrated communications strategies.
Strong media relations experience, with a network of relevant contacts and a track record of securing national coverage.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with an ability to tailor complex material to different audiences.
Experience managing brand identity and reputation in a high-profile environment.
Strong leadership and people management skills, with experience developing teams.
A good understanding of UK policy and media landscapes.
Confident and calm under pressure, with excellent judgement and discretion.
Desirable Attributes: Experience working in or with think tanks, charities, foundations, or public bodies.
Familiarity with communications around politically sensitive or contested issues.
Experience working in fast-paced, matrixed environments with cross-functional teams.
