What makes a good Account Manager?

Excellent Account Managers are often the bedrock of any PR and Public Affairs Agency. They keep customers happy, help ensure fee income, and provide leadership and guidance to junior staff. But what are the qualities that make up a great Account Manager?

From our experience there can be a great array of factors involved in becoming, or just being a fantastic Account Manager, and it can really vary on a number of issues, for example, a financial PR Account Manager will be very different from a Public Affairs Account Manager.

However, there are often three important contributing factors towards great account management:

Commercial acumen. A competent and successful Account Manager will always have the ability to sell their agency to potential clients and provide excellent reasons why their services should be used over those of a rival.

Service Mentality. Being able to put customers first is another important quality a successful Account Manager must have. They always need to be prepared to go the extra mile to ensure customer satisfaction and make sure they are good at maintaining relationships. Essentially, they must thrive on serving others.

Enjoyment of Agency life. Many people working in agency see agency life as means to an end, with the end being a cozy in-house role. But a successful Account Manager will know that they need to avoid this and fully embrace the Agency way of life in order to get the most out of it, and in turn, maximise the output of their staff.
